When preparing for a career, today’s youth need to be aware of the transformational changes that organisations are going through. Gone are last generation’s companies who guaranteed a job for life.  Today’s companies are changing to adapt to the new realities of the 21st century, which includes accommodating to new employees demands.

In choosing a college program and laying out career options, students have to think about the type of organisations that could hire them and, more importantly, the type of organisation they want to work for. Companies will be at different stages of their adoption of 21st century policies, and knowing what you are looking for in a company will be a key factor in launching and upholding a successful career.

One such change is the shift from “command-and-control” management to “coordinate-and-cultivate.” In this approach, according to the , companies are looking to build cultures based on shared responsibility, openness and trust. These initiatives are aimed at empowering and engaging employees by enabling them to have a more direct say in the direction of the company and their careers. In this way, companies are designing internal policies and practices in order to appeal to the attitudes and expectations of a younger, digitally-savvy workforce.

Smart companies have realized that to compete in the 21st century version of the war on talent, they will have to be proactive in their efforts to reach out to new and existing workers. According to a study by Towers Watson, attraction, engagement and retention will remain key challenges for HR departments. Developing a strong employee value propositions, which means expressing what companies can offer to employees, will be key in driving alignment across internal and external human resources efforts to coordinate these activities. Given the importance of talent, organisations will need to find new ways to attract for diversity, top performers and high potentials. So far, companies are struggling to do this efficiently, and, unfortunately, it’s only going to get more difficult as the pace of change increases.

Working for a 21st century company will require new skills, new approaches to learning and a different mindset. The more a student understands these changes and their preferences in a workplace, the more prepared they will be to choose an organization where they will flourish and contribute.
